Currently in its 105th year, Leeds Building Society has around 50 branches across the country and 2,000+ people in its workforce. The member-owned building society places a huge emphasis on its staff’s development, but their previous learning platform wasn’t up to the challenge. It was time to make the switch to Thrive.

Barriers to learning

Currently in its 105th year, Leeds Building Society is a well-established brand with over fifty branches and thousands of staff. While learning and development has always been a big priority within the organisation, their previous solution just wasn’t up to the challenge – and the motivation to search for a new one was born out of unanimous dissatisfaction with a platform that simply wasn’t fit for purpose.

With a clunky, hard-to-use interface and learning that couldn’t be accessed once complete, the platform wasn’t conducive to long-term self-development and therefore wasn’t fulfilling its main purpose. Low levels of engagement, coupled with low marks on employee sentiment surveys, revealed that something quickly needed to change in order to remove these barriers to learning.

Building a learning culture, brick by brick

In searching for a new platform, the L&D team at Leeds Building Society collectively thought about what they wanted for the future of the organisation. They knew that building a learning culture was at the top of their priority list, cognisant of the fact that organisations with a learning culture are more successful than those without.

After a detailed market analysis, their research led them to Thrive. The engagement levels have gone from practically non-existent to above and beyond what the team could’ve anticipated: Within just the first week, 44% of colleagues had accessed Thrive and started to build a skills profile – and this jumped up to 85% within the month, with 400 goals added.

This has contributed to an overall shift in the workforce’s perception of learning within the organisation, and has kick-started the learning culture the team were so keenly searching for. User feedback has been just as overwhelmingly positive for the new platform as it was negative for the previous one: Learners report that Thrive is easy, accessible, and “just makes sense.”
